Tom Lawton at The Mere Golf Resort & Spa
With a reputation as one of the best courses in the north of England, ONPAR were delighted to visit the beautiful Championship course at The Mere Golf Resort and Spa, perfectly nestled in the stunning Cheshire countryside.
On arrival, we were greeted not only with a sense of The Mere’s stunning history as we drove through the majestic archway, we were also given a warm welcome by the Head of Golf; Tom Lawton. Tom guided us around this incredible resort to finish at the perfect setting, just outside the clubhouse and overlooking the lake, where, with the occasional sound of a golfer teeing off, we were able to inquire about life at The Mere.
As the Head of Golf Tom Lawton is responsible for all aspects of golf at the resort, including membership care, golf day-to-day operations, golf events and the Pro Shop. Humbled by his role, it’s clear that it is very much a team effort with no less than three Pro’s in total, all who coach beginners through to professionals, including ladies and juniors, each ensuring that everyone’s needs are met. Oliver Barnes is the Head Professional and runs The Mere Golf Academy that caters for all your coaching needs should you need a little assistance in perfecting your swing.
As well as coaching on course there are three studio bays with the latest coaching technology (usually used in every lesson) as well as facilities and equipment for club fittings available from the Pro’s. As the team specialise in TaylorMade Club Fittings discerning golfers have travelled far and wide to benefit from their knowledgeable and skilled club fitting service.
Having 7 greenkeepers at the resort certainly pays dividends as the course, whatever the season, is always kept in impeccable condition. The course was originally designed by the famous James Braid in 1934 and attracts visitors to come and play The Mere simply because it was so intricately designed by him; one of the main function rooms is even named after him. This 18-hole (6882 yard) par 71 parkland, Championship course offers a fair test to all golfers. Its fairways and greens are maintained to the highest standards and will test your precision while navigating the stunning ravines and thick vegetation.
Another unique and desired feature to The Mere is the complete floating golf ball driving range. Not your typical range, as here you hit your balls into the scenic Mere Lake. ‘Desired’ probably wouldn’t be the word used by the golf team, who have to put on waders to collect your balls at the end of each shift! In preparation of your game, the course also offers a two-tier pitching green, a putting green and a bunker practice area.
The Mere offer excellent society and corporate golf days which they host quite regularly. Sir Alex Ferguson hosts one every year along with many other businessmen and famous sporting stars. The golf team at The Mere can create a tailor-made schedule to suit your preferences (they can even arrange for a member of the Golf Team to clean all your guests’ clubs too after the round). A truly remarkable course and luxurious hotel and spa resort, it has to be one for the bucket list.
The two holes signature holes that stand out for Tom have to be the 8th and the 18th. The 8th, there is water in front of it and bunkers either side of it, so his advice for this par 3, would be to take lots of club and pray you don’t lose too many balls in the water. The 18th is beautifully set into the lake. You need a precise 3rd shot on this par 5, and stick left of the tee.
