Biography / Professional Profile
I turned Professional at 18 having spent my formative years at Romiley Golf Club where I began playing from age 13. At club level, I won many Junior titles including the Strokeplay and Matchplay Championships in 1988 & 1989.
With guidance at that time from the Club Professional, Gary Butler, I began my 4-year PGA training apprenticeship. In 1992 I made the move to De Vere Mottram Hall. Hereunder Head Professional, Tim Rastall, (Former European Tour Professional & now European Seniors Tour Professional) my playing career began to flourish.
1998 proved to be my most successful season with a win and five runner-up places putting me 5th in the annual Assistants Regional Order of Merit as well at getting through to the semi-finals of the Cheshire Matchplay. Other highlights also included getting through to the Final Qualifying Stages for the 2003 Open Championship at Royal St. Georges.
My commitments for the past 10 years have been more focused on coaching and corporate golf day services. Having gained a grade “A” in my Coaching examination in 1994 I always knew this aspect was my forte. In subsequent years I have also gained other qualifications and accreditations in the fields of psychology, specialised putting (Harold Swash), knowledge of different coaching methods and styles via PGA National Coaching Conferences, Advanced Rules of Golf & Disability Coaching (Awarded via PGA & ISPS Handa 2013).
Since 2010 I have also been a Cheshire County Golf Partnership Academy Coach working with elite Junior golfers with the potential to be future County representatives. Our team of 7 coaches recently came 3rd out of over 500 in a national sports award for the innovative coaching programme we deliver and the success it has produced.

Matthew Turnock at Mottram Hall
With one of the most enviable golf professional careers, Matthew Turnock has been the Golf Professional at Mottram Hall Championship Golf Club for almost 27 years. This par 72 course compromises a magnificent parkland fairway, dotted with oak and beech trees, and well-guarded greens are broken up into two contrasting circuits of nine, set over 270 acres of picturesque parkland.
ONPAR caught up with Matthew on a sunny Monday morning. It was clear to see the relaxed and professional nature of Matthew right from the offset, no wonder he’s won awards such as “England’s Golf Coach of the Year” and a special award for his coaching of players with physical and learning disabilities. Matthew helps every ability level of player to enjoy their golf and help them improve their game, so they keep coming back! He is known as an excellent short game coach, putting especially (I know a few of us could do with a bit of help with this!) It’s delightful to see Matthew’s passion for his job, so we asked him what drives this;
“To see the enjoyment derived from anyone I coach when they hit the perfect shot, chip, pitch or putt, plus every time I have ever received an email, text, call or conversation to thank me for helping them achieve the best out of their game, it gives me a great deal of satisfaction to know I have made a difference.”
Incredibly, Mottram Hall Golf Club purpose-built a football pitch when they famously welcomed the German National Football Team for Euro 96. The pitch has recently been upgraded to FA approved status! Many other famous teams have trained on the pitch and played golf when visiting for Champions League matches such as Barcelona, AC Milan and Dynamo Kiev. To further add to this attractive CV, Nike filmed a commercial on the golf course & football pitch featuring Wayne Rooney and Rory McIlroy in 2014.
Not only has Matthew played Ping for the last 10 years (He has an impressive iron collection), he has also coached and played with quite a few footballers, including Dwight Yorke, Peter Schmeichel, Francis Lee and more recently coached Kai Rooney prior to them moving to the USA. “I also coached Mark Hughes’ sons when they were just small children, one of whom, Curtis, has now become a professional golfer.”
Matthew loves golf, and although he is an expert coaching the short game, he also has another favourite area of coaching; “Junior and Disability coaching. To see children developing their skills through fun games as well as the enjoyment that those in the disability groups get in building up their confidence gives me great pleasure. The participants in the North West Stroke Association are especially inspiring to me and I am very touched by their courage and determination.”
There is so many incredible courses around the world, it’s hard for our professional to pick just one! The old course at St. Andrews has to be up there for Matthew. He played it for the first time with his son in 2012, which he described as a bucket list type of moment. Venturing over the pond, the most stunning course Matthew has ever played was Paradise Island in the Bahamas (Were not jealous, at all). Featuring in Matthew’s dream fourball would have to be Sir Nick Faldo. Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus. A match we would love to watch!
Signature Hole
The 3rd par 3 over the pond has to be one of the more challenging holes at Mottram Hall. Players always underestimate the carry, and over 25,000 golf balls have been retrieved by divers in the past 4/5 years. Also, the 17th, par 4, is a really challenging dog left to right hole, with a stream to carry around 80 yards short of the green on the approach.
