Matthew Gillingham has been a PGA Professional for 14 years, and the Professional at Wilmslow since 2010.
I was appointed as the Head Professional at The Wilmslow Golf Club on November 2010 and have already had great success in coaching many players of varying abilities in my year at the club, the junior team have progressed very well and gone on to win the Derbyshire and Cheshire Junior League for the first time in the clubs history, subsequently two of the squad have been awarded scholarships by the English Golf Union at Myerscough College.
The new image of The Professional Shop has made a very positive impact with members and visitors to the club and we look forward to extending the best service and most competitive prices in the area to you very soon.
I embarked on a career in the golf industry in 1998 when I started work for a golf equipment manufacturer learning the importance of club building/fitting and working with the sales and marketing divisions. I started my PGA training in 2000 at Vivary Park Golf Club in Taunton, Somerset and worked as Assistant Professional to Head Professional Mike Steadman.
After three years I moved onto Taunton’s premier private member’s club, Taunton & Pickeridge Golf Club. I worked for Head Professional Simon Stevenson and developed myself as a coach and golf shop manager.
Golf Professional at Gleneagles
In October 2007 I gained the position of Golf Professional at The Gleneagles Hotel and Golf Courses, the move to Scotland enabled me to add to my expertise in coaching, club fitting, golf retailing and event management.
During my time at Gleneagles, I assisted the European Tour and Tournament Director with the planning and organisation required for the 2008, 2009 & 2010 Johnnie Walker Championship and the 2010 Junior Ryder Cup.
I was also fortunate enough to work with a number of high profile Professionals, Elite Amateur Golfers, Celebrities and renowned Tour Coaches.
During my three seasons at Gleneagles, I qualified as an NLP Master Practitioner and host regular workshops to groups and teams to help players with the mental aspect of the game and achieve peak performance. I am also available for one to one tuition on The Mental Game as I believe in a holistic approach to golf coaching.

Matthew Gillingham at Wilmslow Golf Club
Celebrating its 130th anniversary this year, Wilmslow Golf Club is by far one of the oldest clubs in Cheshire, not forgetting its incredible active and vibrant membership. The course nestles in wooded Cheshire farmland with a meandering stream, crossed by four of its eighteen holes. Matthew Gillingham has been a PGA Professional for 14 years, and the Professional at Wilmslow since 2010.
Catching up with Matthew it’s clear to see his love and passion for the game and club. When we asked Matthew what he loved about his job, he said it was the variety of roles that he does. Not only is he the Head Professional, he coaches, mentors, custom fits clubs, works in the pro shop, is a marketeer and organises club tournaments. Keen to differentiate himself from other pro’s, Matthew explains to us that; “At Wilmslow we offer unbiased, honest and pragmatic advice on every department that we specialise in. We are completely independent and have no allegiance to particular brands or products. Our goal without compromise is to increase enjoyment and participation of the great game of golf!”
Matthew has had an enviable career working at championship clubs as well as having the pleasure to coach celebrities and sports professionals. The highlight of his career has to be gaining the position at The Gleneagles Hotel as PGA Professional; “It was an incredible place to work and develop my skillset as a PGA Pro. I am honoured to have been made the Head Professional at Wilmslow Golf Club at a relatively young age of 28!” Footballers, Rugby players, cricketers and tennis players are to name but a few of the sports players Matthew has coached. The one that sticks out the most is Judo Gold Winner in the 2000 Olympics Kosei Inoue. Matthew gave him his first-ever golf lesson and within 25 minutes had him hitting a 7 iron around 200 yards with a range ball! An impressive CV of celebrities but Shakira has to be the most memorable (we can’t think why!), Matthew claims she was hooked after 5 minutes and was hitting a driver around 180 yards after a week. She now plays whenever, wherever she can.
Royal Birkdale, Sunningdale and Turnberry are to name but a few of Matthews favourite courses. He thoroughly enjoys the challenge of the more modern courses around the world; “I just love the old traditional courses in the UK that have stayed current by evolving through the years!” Even though Matthew loves the traditional game, he really enjoys utilising modern technology to offer accurate and visual feedback to players, using tech such as TrackMan and Slowmotion Video.
Currently carrying a real mixture or irons, Matthew is extremely passionate about clubs. “ I am a big believer in putting in play what works rather than sticking to a particular brand throughout the bag. I currently have TaylorMade woods, Callaway Irons, Titleist Wedges and an Odyssey Putter!” Matthew would choose a classic fourball selection of Tiger Woods, Valentino Rossi and his father.
The 18th is regarded the signature hole at Wilmslow. A long sweeping par 5 that has everything. A tight tee shot, undulating fairway, a 30 yards drop in the fairway and a stream that comes into play with a 100 yards to go that runs along side the fairway and close to the green. Matthew particularly enjoys playing are the gorgeous par 3’s on the back nine (14th and 17th) “In my opinion, they are the two best par 3’s in Cheshire, simply stunning golf holes”.
Top Tip: “If you want to lower your scores, improve your mechanics and fundamentals. Understand putting!”
