James Rowlands at Hazel Grove Golf Club
“The reason the golf pro tells you to keep you head down is so you can’t see him laughing”
Phyllis Diller, American comedienne b.1917
That may have been true of Ms Diller’s golf teacher, but James Rowland PGA’s coaching philosophy is to always laugh with you, never at you. Hazel Groves’ experienced Head Professional ensures that golf lessons are fun and that you enjoy them, and that is why James has proved a popular coach with his members and clients.
James began his coaching career supporting the Head Professional at Chorlton-cum-Hardy Golf Club in 2003 and has since had attachments and PGA positions at Ashton-under-Lyne and Oldham Golf Club prior to attaining his Head professional position at Hazel Grove in January 2012. Not a bad player either having recently placed 6th with a score of -2 (69) in the recent Charity PGA Pro Am Tournament this summer, hosted at Hazel Grove.
From tee to green James is fully qualified to coach all aspects of the game but thrives when it comes to coaching beginners and junior golfers. He has been fundamental into developing the club’s Beginners Academy, an academy membership package that follows a step-by-step beginner coaching course covering the basics in golf. Being able to encourage and drive the enjoyment in the sport that he loves at such an important stage of a golfers learning and development, is why James loves his role.
Also determined to provide a first-class service, James joined the Foremost Buying Group, a network to support independent golf professionals to provide a competitive retail service from leading suppliers direct to his customers.
As the club’s website explains “Golf’s not just a game, it’s also a way of meeting new friends, it’s where lots of business is conducted and it’s just a lovely way for family and friends to enjoy quality time. Sometimes it’s downright frustrating but every golfer comes off the course having had a great time.” We at ONPAR couldn’t agree more.
Established as a golf club in 1913, Hazel Grove was improved in the 1920s with a redesign by Augusta National and Cypress point designer’s Dr Mackenzie and Nicholson Golf Course Contracts putting Hazel Grove in good company. The beautiful and well-appointed parkland course characterized by several natural water hazards is the perfect setting for year-round golf without a temporary green in sight!
The signature hole at Hazel Grove Golf Club – the 15th
With so many outstanding holes, it’s hard to highlight any one as a ‘signature’ hole. However, the fifteenth, dominated by a large sweeping pond, which runs along the left-hand edge of the fairway, and across the front and down the left of the green, must take the honour. At 285 yards, this par 4 represents the ultimate risk or reward hole.
From the elevated tee, the green seems within reach with a well-struck drive, but your mind is further concentrated by the out of bounds which runs along the right edge of the fairway. The decision is yours – layup or take on the green.
Hazel Grove Golf Club is proud to be a tour venue on the roster of the EXEL Pro Tour and is also an official PGA qualifying course.
