Gareth Jones at Sandiway Golf Club
Established in 1920, the course has been continuously developed from its original designer Ted Ray, who was the first Ryder Cup captain. The overly aesthetically pleasing, par 70 course is set in mixed heath and woodland in the middle of Northwich. With a standard scratch of 72, it’s an enjoyable test of any golfers’ ability whatever his or her handicap.
Gareth Jones, resident professional, has been at the club since 2005. In 2013 he became the Head Professional, but before then was the Assistant Professional at Sandiway. He turned professional in 2005 having had an amateur handicap of +2 at Porthmadog and Royal St David’s Golf Clubs. Gareth was on a golf scholarship in America in 2000 and holds the course record at three courses including Eaton Golf Club in 2012 with a round of 64.
“I played international golf for Wales on all levels from under 16 through to representing Wales as a professional in 2010 in the European team Championship. In 2010 I played in the Welsh National PGA Championship, unfortunately losing in a final round playoff. In that final round I carded a final round of 65, going out in 29. I have won 12 pro-am events since turning professional”.
Gareth undoubtedly has a hefty CV with his competition wins, he has also won 2013 Breakthrough Professional of the year and 2017 EMP Professional of the year.
A beautiful hidden gem of Cheshire, Sandiway has been under development. The clubhouse has been extended and improvements to facilities have been undertaken. A professional’s shop has been constructed; large investments in machinery and equipment to maintain the course have been made; and not least, leases have been purchased so that that club now owns the freehold of its assets. The latest improvements are the installation of a new water sprinkler system across the course and replacement of outdated sewerage facilities. The club celebrates its centenary in 2020 when a range of events will mark the occasion.
One of the benefits of membership at Sandiway is the ‘Passport Scheme’. Under this reciprocal scheme members are able to play at the ‘with Member rate’ at Beau Desert, Bromborough, Clitheroe, Conway, Fairhaven, Fulford GC (York) Lancaster, Notts (Hollinwell), Pannal, Sherwood Forest, Southport and Ainsdale, Whittington Heath and Wilmslow Golf Clubs.
Signature Hole
Hole 17. 308 yards – par 4.
Sandiway’s signature hole with the Sandiway Oak situated only forty yards from the green. A tee-shot of around 190 yards, all carry, will leave you a 100 yard pitch onto the green. The biggest hitters will be tempted to go for the green but be aware of the oak tree and the three deep bunkers protecting the green.
