I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself – I am the Macdonald Portal Head PGA Golf Professional at Portal Golf Club and Portal Hotel Golf & Spa. I am very happy and very excited to be here and I am here to be able to help you with any and all of your golfing requirements.
I have been a PGA Golf Professional and dedicated Golf Coach for over 15 years.
I am especially proud of the development of my Junior Golf Academies over the last 7 years, as well as my England Golf development programs and the work I have done with the Cheshire County Academy.
My extensive experience ranges from helping non-golfers discover the game then become regular golfers through to elite players and high achievers with everyone in between.
As well as being a Mind Factor Golf psychology Coach I take great pride in being able to help with all aspects of the game not only the swing and technique.
I am always available to meet, chat and discuss any way in which I can help you and your golf.
Much of people’s golf development begins with finding out exactly what we can do to help you; it all starts with a conversation about you and your golf.

“I don’t really think of myself as differentiating, PGA Golf Professionals are amongst the most professional people out there.”
ONPAR couldn’t agree more with Professional Daniel Martinez-Perez, who has been the Head Professional at The Macdonald Portal for 3 and a half years. Not only is Daniel a PGA qualified Golf Professional, he is also Mind Factor trained in Golf Psychology and an NLP Practitioner. As well as being an England Golf Development coach and England Golf County Academy Coach.
We caught up with Daniel over a very sunny bank holiday weekend to learn more about life at the beautiful Macdonald Portal. There are three courses at The Macdonald; The Championship, The Premier and The Arderne (9 holes). Daniel enjoys coaching on The Macdonald courses, and has several celebrity members playing alongside him, Liverpool Football Club being one example. He has been lucky enough to work alongside the likes of David Llewellyn, Maureen Madill and Simon Edwards. Like many PGA Professionals, Daniel’s passion for coaching is driven by his clients;
“Whether my clients are trying to get the ball in the air for the first time or trying to pursue their playing career, I get satisfaction from helping them along their way on their golfing journey. I love coaching the junior academy, they are such good fun and they really remind you about the love and passion for the game and just how enjoyable it is and should be.”
Daniel enjoys all aspects of the coaching game but particularly feels like helping beginners get started really stands out for him. He really enjoys the psychology aspects as well, such as golf development and game and self-management. He feels it’s such a huge area that impacts us all and is so often overlooked or even dismissed.
“I try to maintain the highest standards of professionalism I can, I go above and beyond for my clients where possible and I keep myself up to date with all the latest golf and coaching information, further education and new research”.
No stranger to North West courses, Daniel admits his favourite worldwide course must be the one residing on his doorstep; Royal Birkdale. Also, the venue where he met his number one fourball player; Seve. “How could you not love him? I met him in 1991 at The Open. I was 11 years old and my Grandfather managed to get us clubhouse passes. Seve placed his hands on my shoulders and said “excuse me son” – I’d frozen in shock at seeing him. To an 11-year-old, it was like I’d been touched by God!” Along with Seve, Daniel would also place Gary Player and Ben Hogan in his dream fourball.
So how does our busy Pro chill out? Getting lost in a film at the cinema seems to be what tickles him. Coaching 6 days a week takes its toll so going out with family and friends is what he spends most of his days off doing. Daniel is most definitely a foodie and particularly enjoys tasting a variety of cuisine in Chester. His most favourite places to frequent have to be; Barlounge, Joseph Benjamin, Porta Tapas and Cock O’Barton.
The signature hole at Macdonald Portal Championship is the par 3, 14th hole. A short, uphill, par 3 with waterfront, right and rear, along with trees left and right makes the hole not only visually attractive but imposing and well-guarded.
The approach must be high and far enough to carry not only the water but also the tree’s if you go for the pin, which is invariably tucked away on the middle left or short right. When you get to the green it’s a generous two-tier that slopes back towards the water at the front. The water behind is only 5 paces from the back edge of the green, so distance control and flight control is key!
“Above all else as PGA Golf Professionals, we are ambassadors of this beautiful game and getting more people into golf and helping them to get on their way is part and parcel of what we do.”
