Instantly you are put at ease with his friendly banter and enthusiastic charm fresh from Fleetwood. Ian Taylor, PGA and former event manager for Tailored Golf, has experienced the enviable life of a journeyman playing professionally.
Achieving numerous Pro-Am wins along the way including the Lancashire Strokeplay in 2000 at West Lancashire GC, Ian is still the proud holder of the course record at Morecambe with a remarkable 61.
Ian qualified in 1996 with the first Golf Scholarship in the UK at Merrist Wood College; similar college courses have since been developed as a consequence across the country, including one locally at Myerscough College.
Although he goes by the name ‘Coach’, specialising in coaching, custom fitting and event management; ‘knight in shining armour’ might be more pertinent since he played his part in the team that recently brought Fleetwood Golf Club back from the brink of collapse.
The formidable committee has rejuvenated the club into a vibrant, full waiting list facility by acknowledging their demographic and growing membership of under 35’s and creating an applicable membership structure.
Ian Taylor is now one half of a partnership that is certainly keeping pace with the golf industry, sharing the club’s head professional role alongside Dan Skelcher PGA, and co-founder of Golf Pro Services Ltd.
On top of their game and the use of technology, these Pros at Fleetwood will always start out by discussing your goals and work together reaching them. Imagery captured via their high-speed cameras aid your development and track your progress through timely studio sessions.
In addition to this, they have some fantastic short game facilities for you to hone your new-found techniques and a challenging 18-hole Links layout to sharpen your course management skills and ultimately put your whole game to the test in varied conditions.
A traditionalist through and through Ian tells us proudly that Fleetwood GC is one of the top 10 oldest Links Courses in England and (if you look up the literal translation of Links) …is the only genuine Links golf course on the Fylde Coast…he says with a wry smile. The club itself was formerly a shooting range, and even up to the last 5 years, musket bullets have been found on the course.
Our Signature Hole
With over 12 years at Fleetwood and who knows how many rounds he’s played; Ian is more than qualified to give us a top tip or two.
The 8th, a par 3 is often used as our signature hole but I would choose another par 3, the 11th. This hole is only 145 yds off the white tees but has a raised green with deep bunkers either side.
“a hidden gem offering a friendly welcome”
With a prevailing wind in the golfer’s face really creates a challenge. All I can recommend it don’t miss the green. Take one extra club and you will be fine.
On the whole, this is generally a windy course so the ability to hit the ball low and reduce spin is a must, out of bounds is left on all of the first 9 holes, so aim right!
This truly is a hidden gem offering a friendly welcome that provides great value for money.
